Audubon Zoo Preps For Mother’s Day Tradition

This year, New Orleans’ beloved Queen of Soul Irma Thomas will take the stage for a milestone Mother’s Day performance at Audubon Zoo.  Not only with this mark Thomas’s 33rd consecutive Mother’s Day performance at the zoo, but will also be celebrating her 75th birthday.

On Sunday, May 8, the Grammy Award winner will be back in her customary position on the Capital One Stage in Audubon Zoo, where she has headlined the Mother’s Day celebration for more than three decades.  Because Irma’s 2016 appearance has a special meaning, Audubon will recognize her diamond jubilee birthday with a presentation before her performance.

We’re once again pleased to honor all our moms with complimentary admission to Audubon Zoo on Mother’s Day,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “And there’s no better day to wish the happiest of birthdays to one of New Orleans’ favorite moms, Irma Thomas.”

The full day of food, music and family fun begins at 10 a.m. and is included with your Audubon Zoo admission.  The Mother’s Day celebration will also feature craft tents, showcasing jewelry and other gifts.  Also available for purchase is a menu complete with poboys, plate lunches, and desserts.

The Mother’s Day Celebration at Audubon Zoo always draws big crowds, so non-members are urged to buy tickets online ahead of time. Guests with advance tickets can skip the long lines.

Live music begins at 11:30 a.m. on the Capital One Stage. Irma Thomas and her band, The Professionals, will perform everyone’s old favorites and new hits from 2:30 p.m. until 4 p.m.
