SeaWorld’s Discovery Cove in Orlando is kicking off Dolphin Awareness Month in the best possible way: with the birth of a new calf. The 52-pound newborn, named Skye, was born February 23, 2016 to 32-year old mother, Astra.
This flippered new addition marks Discovery Cove’s 30th dolphin born in the park since it opened in 2000. Skye will be joining her sisters Amara and Aries who also call Discovery Cove home.
Discovery Cove’s veterinary and animal care team has been monitoring Skye 24 hours a day, to ensure she receives the highest level of care. Skye is a healthy 4-foot long calf that is nursing and bonding with her mother. This past week, the SeaWorld and Discovery Cove veterinary team performed the first neonatal wellness exam on Skye with her mother, Astra, right be her side. These examinations play a crucial role in the general health care given to all animals at SeaWorld, Aquatica, and Discovery Cove.
We here at ZooNation extend a heartfelt congratulations to the team at Discovery Cove, and we wish all of you a happy Dolphin Awareness Month!
