The Dublin Zoo has announced the birth of a male Rothschild giraffe. The baby was born on Sunday, October 25th, and stands at 5 feet tall, and weighs about 100 pounds.
The baby giraffe made his first outside appearance in the African Savanna at the zoo last week. The zoo currently has a herd of eight giraffes.
The herd of giraffes seemed to be very interested in the birth from beginning to end according to zookeepers at the zoo. This birth is important to the species as Rothschild giraffes are the most threatened of the nine subspecies of giraffe.
Male Rothschild giraffes grow to 20 feet in height and can weigh more than two tons. It is reported that fewer than 670 remain in the wild.
