Mark Your Calendars: Date Set For Bei Bei’s Public Debut

This is pretty much as cute as it gets, folks.

Smithsonian National Zoo

Back on August 22, Bei Bei was born at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C.  Since then, the panda house has been closed to allow mother and cub a quiet place and time to bond.  Bei Bei is now over 12 pounds, healthy, and growing.  This is a remarkable transformation as just three months ago, Bei Bei was a pink, hairless cub weighing about five ounces.  Bei Bei is now capable of crawling, and sometimes walking all on his own.

It was recently announced that Bei Bei will make his official public debut on January 16, 2016.  However, Members of Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) will be able to see Bei Bei starting January 8.

Although this debut will reopen the panda house to public viewing, Bei Bei and his mother, Mei Xiang, will continue to have access to the den where he was born.  This den is only viewable via panda cams.  On days of high attendance at the zoo, visitors will be allowed into the panda house in small groups.
