Riverbank Zoo and Botanical Garden (located in Columbia, SC) is in the running for a spot on the list of the best 10 zoos in the country. They are a finalist for this accolade, along with 19 other zoos. All finalists are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and were hand-picked by a panel of zoo and family travel experts. Most of the finalists are well known zoos, which is why it is a huge honor for this zoo to be considered among the leaders of zoological innovation, conservation, and research. USA Today is asking for the public to cast their votes through Monday, March 27. You can vote once per day, until voting ends at noon on the final voting day. The winners that make the top 10 list will be announced at the end of the month on March 31st, 2017.
This is an accomplishment for the Riverbank Zoo & Gardens because they have grown to be one of the largest zoo’s in the Southeast. They have over 2,000 animals, the zoo spans 170 acres, and they uses psychological barriers so that it is free of bars and cages. They strive to educate their guests using informative graphics, tours, feeding opportunities, and enrichment programs that make visits to this zoo enjoyable for all ages. Last year the zoo had a record 1.2 million visitors with 40% of those visitors visiting from out of state.
It is important to support all of the work that the zoological facilities accomplish, but it never hurts to support your local zoo or favorite zoo in friendly competition. It acts as additional encouragement for zoos to always be on top of their game.
