Shedd Aquarium Celebrates Dolphin Birth

On the morning of April 19, Shedd Aquarium animal care staff, trainers, and veterinarians gathered above and below the water to watch Pacific white-sided dolphin Katrl (kuh-TREHL) give birth to her first calf.

Both mom and calf appear healthy and are bonding. Immediately after the birth, Katrl pushed the calf to the surface multiple times to make sure the new swimmer had plenty of breaths of air. Mom and calf will remain under 24-hour observation by animal experts and will remain off exhibit during this important bonding time.

Check out the video below to see the full video of the birth filmed from an underwater viewing window.

The new calf must now reach a number of critical milestones, including continuing to bond with its mother, learning to nurse and, later, feeding independently. Shedd’s dedicated staff is using the knowledge obtained through decades of experience and previous successful births at the aquarium to help the mother and calf reach these significant milestones.
