Last month, we told you about a baby western lowland gorilla at Woodland Park Zoo in need of a name. After nearly 3,500 submissions during the public naming contest, a winner has been selected. Say hello to Yola!
In the African language of Hausa, Yola means “firefly”. Caretakers chose this name for this four-month-old, “She has been a spark that has catalyzed and solidified the bonds within her mom’s group.”
Yola’s mother, Nadiri also has a Hausa name which means “rare”. The zoo’s staff is grateful for the many submissions and it is their hope that visiting and learning about Yola and her family will continue to inspire care and concern for the future of gorillas in the wild.
